PresidentRaphael Chalvarian |
Raphael has worked in the banking and the travel industry for the past 30 years in the US and the Australian continent. Currently he is working in healthcare. A former member of the Australian Institute of Training and Development and an Accredited Speaker Member of the National Speakers Association of Australia, he is also a member of Toastmasters International. With over ten years experience in training and in speaking in front of large groups, Raphael is still a student of his craft. He firmly believes that there is always something new that you learn when delivering a presentation. His goals for this year are (1) to promote the benefits of becoming a member of ASTD to every learning and organizational development individual, (2) to encourage the Chapter members to earn their CPLP credentials, and, (3) to seek aspiring leaders willing to serve on the Board of Directors for the NM Chapter. Raphael is an Australian citizen and a U.S. resident, married to his American wife, Michelle. |

Hazel moved to Albuquerque, in 1997, from Chicago, Illinois, where she worked as a legislative person for Speaker Michael J. Madigan while pursuing her Masters degree from the University of Illinois, 1993-1995. She worked as a lobbyist for UNM and became a Special Education teacher for the APS school district. Hazel left NM in 2001 to pursue her passion in rock climbing in Sonora, CA. She returned to ABQ in 2003. She is a proud mother of a college graduate. She is currently pursuing her doctoral studies in Education, specializing in Leadership in Higher Education. She hopes to obtain her doctoral degree in the winter of 2009. She has been in training and development, in many capacities, for 15 years. Her passion includes yoga, meditation, practicing authenticity and empowering those with no voice. |

Leah tested for and received her CPLP certification in 2008! Other professional certifications include Franklin-Covey'sT The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Leading at the Speed of Trust, Certified with AchieveGlobal in leadership and service training programs and Development Demensions International, Business Ethics, ESL, and Mediation. She has served on the board of directors for The Literacy Center of Albuquerque for 4 years and Albuquerque Quality Network, served as an Examiner for Quality New Mexico, and currently serves as President for the New Mexico Chapter of American Society for Training and Development (ASTD-NM). She is also a member of College & University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA), and the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). |

Karen is a Certified Professional Organizer®(CPO), and a Certified Records Manager (CRM). She is a member of both the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) and is the VP-Membership of the Rio Grande (Albuquerque) Chapter of the Association of Records Managers and Administrators (ARMA). She has an MBA from Wake Forest University. Karen is on the Board of Directors of the Rio Rancho Toastmasters Club, serving as Vice President-Education and Secretary. She has attained the bronze level in both communication and leadership from Toastmasters. Karen is also an Ambassador for the Rio Rancho Chamber of Commerce. |

Leah is the co-creator of the Training Development and Instructional Technology (TDIT) certificate program offered at UNM in partnership with the American Society of Training and Development in New Mexico and teaches courses for the TDIT program. Leah has served in board and committee positions for ASTD New Mexico for the past six years. Leah earned her Master’s at UNM in Organization Learning and Instructional Technology with an emphasis in Multimedia. |
VP of MembershipMarianela Gish |
Ms. Gish is an experienced mediation trainer and practitioner. She has trained hundreds of students, teachers, and professionals in mediation and conflict resolution skills both nationally and internationally. In addition, she has assisted in the instructional design and development of many of NMCDR’s programs. She has presented at the Conflict Resolution Education Network International Conference; the most-widely known policy and information organization representing mediation and conflict resolution interests at all educational levels. She has taught Restorative Justice at the University of New Mexico Law School, and is a graduate of Getting to the Heart of Conflict; Harvard Negotiation Inside Initiative, Harvard School of Law. In 2005, the Community Victim Restoration Program at the Juvenile Justice Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico, developed and managed by Ms. Gish, was nominated as Program Model for Sustainability by the national Office of Juvenile Justice Department Programs. She also holds the first Stephen Sprague Cultural Diversity in Mediation Award from The New Mexico Mediation Association. |

David also has his own business, BizDev Technologies, where he provides his expertise to organizations of all sizes, including services such as web hosting, site development and maintenance, training and curriculum development. He has provided services to various departments at the University of New Mexico, Santa Fe Community College, Pegasus Financial Group, Expo New Mexico, the VA Center for Cooperative Studies, as well as numerous small business clients. David earned his CPLP certification in 2008 and holds a BBA in Marketing and General Management, and has always been an entrepreneur. For many years he held sales and marketing positions, making his perspective and contribution to the IT profession a unique one. For a period of ten years he was also a practicing massage therapist! His focus in all of his activities is to improve communication and performance. The level of technical expertise David has brought to our board continues to allow our organization to utilize better systems for promoting and supporting programs and services for our membership, elevating the professional operations of our administration and allowing the board to devote more efforts to quality programming and support services for our members. |
VP of Business DevelopmentDebbie Howard |
Deb’s approachable, practical, results-oriented style has allowed her to impact organizations in the areas of group facilitation, team, workforce and leadership development, strategic planning, business process mapping, and change management. She has business and leadership experience in manufacturing, high tech, and higher education. She has held positions as a programmer analyst, leadership development curriculum manager, human resources manager, organizational development account manager and project training team lead. Deb’s professional certifications include Franklin-Covey's™, Leading at the Speed of Trust, Development Dimensions International (DDI) Leadership and Team development, Interaction Association(IA) Facilitative Leadership, Personnel Decisions (PDI) 360 feedback facilitator, Myers Briggs APT facilitator and Basic Mediation. In addition to serving on the American Society for Training and Development New Mexico Board (ASTDNM), Deb has served on the board of directors for the American Business Women’s Association chapters in Richardson, Texas and Albuquerque, NM. She is a member of the National Organizational Development (OD) Network, the College & University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA), and serves as an Ambassador for Albuquerque Economic Development. |
